rather than to cause the absence of the wild-type enzyme. It is of interest that in both of these cases hybrid enzymes are formed in heterozygotes. Dimerization which has been proposed as the basis for hybrid vigor' may be a common feature of maize enzymes. Summary.-Two alleles of the E3 gene in maize specify electrophoretically separable esterases. As is the case with the pH 7.5 esterases formed by the E1 gene, a hybrid esterase with an intermediate migration rate is found in the E3 heterozygotes. The enzyme specified by one of the E3 alleles has a migration rate identical to that formed by one of the E1 alleles. * Research supported by National Science Foundation grant GB 302. 1 Schwartz, D., these PROCEEDINGS, 46, 1210 (1960).

Identification of amino acids in Securigera securidaca, a popular medicinal herb in Iranian folk medicine

Securigera securidaca (L.) Degen & Dorfl grows in different parts of Iran. The seeds of the species are used in Iranian folk medicine as an anti-diabetic agent. Many studies have established hypoglycemic effects of amino acids and in the present investigation, amino acids of Securigera securidaca seeds have been evaluated. The ground seeds were extracted using petroleum ether,...

Alcoholism – the Worst Addiction

Introduction: The most common substance of abuse/dependence in patients presenting for treatment in western countries is alcohol. Ethyl alcohol or ethanol which is also called medicinal alcohol is used as an official drug compendium. It is also administered as an antidote in methanol poisoning. However, regular consumption of high amounts of alcoholic drinks induces dependence and addiction lea...

Effects of ethanol on extracellular amino acid levels in high-and low-alcohol sensitive rats: a microdialysis study.

Selectively bred high-alcohol sensitive (HAS) and low-alcohol sensitive (LAS) rats possess a number of behavioural and electrophysiological differences in their responses to alcohol. Using a microdialysis technique, we have evaluated whether the levels of the amino acids aspartate, glutamate, arginine, taurine, and alanine in HAS and LAS rats differ in their response to ethanol administration (...

Taurine modulates catalase, aldehyde dehydrogenase, and ethanol elimination rates in rat brain.

Chronic administration of either the sulphonated amino acid taurine (0.32 or 0.62 g/kg for 2 weeks) or the catalase inhibitor, 3-amino, 1,2,4-triazole (AT: 0.5 or 1.0 g/kg for 5 days) significantly reduced catalase activities both in the brain and liver of male Wistar rats. The total brain activity of aldehyde dehydrogenase was significantly increased after the lower dose of taurine and after a...

استفاده از اتانول و دمای پایین در جداسازی آلبومین از پلاسمای انسانی

Background and Objective: Human plasma is a suitable source for different proteins and enzymes with a variety of therapeutic effects. Examples include coagulation factors VIII and IX, immunoglobulin, and albumin, which consists of a 585 amino-acid chain, weighing 66.5 kD. Albumin molecule also has 17 di-sulfide bridges which form a stable spherical protein structure, which it cause of 80% of on...
